Carter: Mexico an Exporter of Security on the Continent

STATE OF MEXICO — United States Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter, said that Mexico has become a global exporter of security, on the continent and beyond.

In the a ceremony for the Northern Command of the United States of America, Carter said that Mexico continues securing common values and respect for human rights will be the basis for the security efforts throughout the hemisphere and around the world.

Addressing the Defense and Navy Secretaries of Mexico, Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda and Vidal Francisco Soberón Sanz, respectively, Carter thanked “our Mexican partners for their determination to extend our association for continental defense.”

“Mexico has become a global exporter of security on the continent and beyond it,” Carter said. “I want to applaud Mexico for its growing relationship in defense and also continuing to ensure that common values and respect for human rights are the basis of the security efforts throughout the hemisphere and around the world.”

Prior to the ceremony, the Mexican state officials held a meeting with Admiral William Evans Gortney and General Lori Jean Robinson, outgoing and incoming command, respectively, with the aim of strengthening the bonds between the North American countries’ armed forces.

They also held an informal meeting with Secretary Carter, who reaffirmed the ties of friendship between the armed forces of Mexico and the United States, that is seen in the bilateral relationship in security and defense.
