Earthquake in Indonesia

YAKARTA, Indonesia – An earthquake registered at 7.8 on the Richter scale in the southwest of Sumatra, Indonesia on Wednesday, which led the governments of Indonesia, Australia and Chile to declare a tsunami alert.

The earthquake occurred at 7:49 p.m. local time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was 804 kilometers southwest of Pariaman, Indonesia and was 24 kilometers deep. The USGS reported that at first the earthquake registered at 7.9 on the Richter scale.

There have not been reports of injuries or deaths, but there is still possible danger of a tsunami.
