RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s suspended President Dilma Rousseff is proposing to let Brazilians decide if they want to hold new, early presidential elections if lawmakers restore her to power.
Rousseff made the proposal Tuesday in a letter to lawmakers and the Brazilian people as the Senate readies to vote on whether to permanently remove her from office.
Under the plan, there would be a nationwide plebiscite on whether to call for new elections.
Rousseff’s current term ends in 2018. If she’s permanently removed, interim President Michel Temer would serve it out.
