LA PAZ, Bolivia — Bolivian President Evo Morales is asking to see a son he says he’d long thought dead. It’s a strange new twist in a scandal focused on his former girlfriend, who has been arrested as part of an influence-trafficking probe into the Chinese firm where she worked.

Outside the courthouse where Gabriela Zapata was charged on Saturday, a woman claiming to be her aunt said that the child is alive and named Ernesto Fidel.

Zapata has yet to comment.

Morales said Monday he doesn’t know why Zapata told him that the infant died shortly after birth in 2007. He asked for the child to be brought to him so he can assume his paternal responsibilities.
