Monterrey — British tennis star Johanna Konta easily beat Colombia’s Mariana Duque-Mariño in the first round of the 2016 Monterrey Open. Konta, seeded 4th, was always in control as she prevailed 6-3, 6-3, to qualify for the second round.

Konta’s compatriot Heather Watson also progressed at Monterrey’s Sonoma Club, overcoming a poor start to the final set to defeat Japan’s Misaki Doi 6-4. 6-7, 6-3. Meanwhile, Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni defeated Germany’s Tatjana Maria in straight sets.
Mexico has two representatives in the single’s draw. Marcela Zacarías, ranked 237 in the world, will take on Puerto Rico’s Mónica Puig in the first round Tuesday while Victoria Rodríguez takes on U.S. athlete Christina McHale.
Italy’s Sara Errani, ranked no. 17, is seeded first for the tournament.
