A leader of Tamaulipas’s Zeta cartel died Tuesday in a clash with the police, according to a report by the Tamaulipas Coordination Group (GCT). Ricardo Carreón Olvera, aka “El Calo,” was the alleged successor of former Zeta leader Francisco “Pancho” Carreón, who was killed April 22, 2017 in a confrontation with Reynosa’s marine corps.
GCT’s report states that members of the Federal Public Security Secretariat (SSP) and the State Attorney’s General Office (PGJE) were patrolling the streets of Xiconténcatl, southern Tamaulipas, in search for Carreón Olvera when armed civilians opened fire at them from different spots. In response, the federal officers called the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) for reinforcements.
Carreón Olvera was one of the most wanted criminals in Tamaulipas, with several charges for extortion and criminal conspiracy under his belt.
