Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Videgaray Caso said the Mexican government will focus on making sure the U.S. Congress grants a definite legal and migratory status to Mexican DREAMers in a span of six months.
The claims come as a response to President Donald Trump’s ending of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Videgaray Caso said that DREAMers contribute heavily to the United States’ economy, culture and society, which makes their defense a moral obligation.
“We have a moral obligation to act diplomatically and with strict attachment to U.S. and international law. We must ensure the U.S. Congress does what’s necessary to define the legal status of these young people,” he said.
Both Videgaray Caso and President Enrique Peña Nieto said that Mexico will keep its borders open for any DREAMers willing to come back to the country, ensuring there will be job opportunities and educational options available for them.
