University Unions Promote Education Quality

Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM) rector Jorge Olvera García, leading the closing of the 11th International University Unions Congress “University Unionism: Innovation in the Global Era,” said that university unions play an important role in defending the rights of their members and promote education quality within these institutions.

Accompanied by National University Workers Confederation (CONTU) secretary general José Enrique Levet Gorozpe, Olvera García acknowledged the role of university syndicalism in education, which has “shown cohesion and unity regarding educational institutions.”

The event was also attended by UAEM Autonomous Academic Staff Associations Federation (FAAPAUAEM) secretary general Víctor Manuel Pineda Gutiérrez and UAEM Single Union of Workers and Employees León Carmona Castillo. Olvera García commended the effort made to organize the conference, which was attended by more than 400 unionists with the aim of finding solutions to the issues faced by higher education institutions across the country.

Representative from 92 different academic unions from all over the country were present at the event in which Olvera García said that public universities are synonymous with quality education and that UAEM has meet the national and international standards for quality education for more than two decades.

At the event, Olvera García recognized the support of State of Mexico government and the Toluca town hall in developing the International University Unions Congress.
