UNESCO Director General Calls for Investigation into Mexican Journalist’s Murder

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director General Irina Bokova urged authorities to investigate the murder of journalist Pedro Tamayo Tosas in Tierra Blanca, which occurred July 20.

“I condemn the murder of Pedro Tamayo Rosas,” said Bokova. “I call on the authorities to investigate his death and bring the perpetrators to justice. Weapons should not be used to circumscribe the freedom of the press and the freedom of information, which are essential for democracy and the rule of law.”

Tamayo Rosas was a journalist for the Al Calor Político and Piñero de la Cuenca newspapers. He was shot outside his home. He had been under police protection since he began receiving threats in January 2016.

The statements made by Bokova regarding the murders of media workers respond to Resolution 29, adopted in 1997 by the UNESCO General Conference, titled “Condemnation of Violence Against Journalists.”
