Representative in Mexico for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Jesús Peña Palacios called the amount of disappearances and mass graves in the countryas “terrifying.”

During the seminar “The Forensic Needs of Mexico for Disappearances and Mass Graves,” Peña Palacio cited the report by the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) which alludes to more than 800 mass graves and more than 35,000 bodies that have been exhumed in the last 10 years.

“There are constant news about the discovery of mass graves, bodies and human remains in many parts of the country.”

Juan Pedro Schaerer; head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) faction for Mexico, Latin America and Cuba; said that in the face of so many disappearances  and mass graves, it is urgent that the senate approves the Enforced Disappearance Law, which would support families and guarantee an immediate and effective search.

In addition to this law, Schaerer thinks that there should be a national protocol for the exhumation and identification of bodies.
