Topics Decided for the PRI National Assembly

Issues like opening up the party to register external people as candidates, eliminating legislative immunity, accepting former military, coalition governments and ending the plurinominal “chapulines” are stated to be the topics that an estimated 15,000 councilors will debate and vote on in the Institutional Revolutionary Party’s (PRI) National Assembly, which will be held on Saturday at the Palacio de los Deportes.

PRI’s National Committee Executive Enrique Ochoa Reza remarked on the importance of this meeting for 2018. “This is the moment for us to discuss our statutes, our basic documents, define the procedures to choose the best women and men to be our candidates in the biggest election that our country has ever had,” Ochoa Reza said.

The most controversial issue is allowing someone who has not formed a part of the party in the past access to the presidential candidacy. An example of this is José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, who still has to be endorsed by the rest of those who attend the assembly.
