The High Chamber of the Federal Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF) upheld the ruling made by the Mexico City Electoral Tribunal to sanction the National Action Party (PAN) for violating the Mexico City election law.
In a public session, the main body of the TEPJF found that the PAN had failed to obey Article 222 of the Mexico City election code during the 2013 election. Article 222 requires political parties to dedicate three percent of their budget to promote leadership roles for women and young people.
The sanction consists of suspending public funding to the PAN for the equivalent of eight days of government support in 2013, or about 1.43 million pesos ($75,438).
“I find it strange that a law that was passed by legislators, from political parties, has been disobeyed by one of those political parties,” said Magistrate Salvador Nava Gomar. “There have been several complaints that the PAN has not been complying with the law, that it has not been giving leadership positions to women.”
The TEPJF also upheld a sanction by the National Electoral Institute (INE) against the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) for turning in spending reports late for the 2015-2016 election cycle.
Judge María del Carmen Alanís Figueroa said that Morena’s failure to turn in spending reports on time obstructed the INE’s process of analyzing the income and spending of political parties.
