Teachers Protest Due Payments in Veracruz

XALAPA, Veracruz — Unionized teachers and members of division 56 of the National Education Workers Union (SNTE) carried out road blocks and took public schools in the main cities of Veracruz to demand overdue payments.

Members of the dissident group Popular Movement of Teachers of Veracruz (MMPV) from over 14 independent unions as well as from SNTE also occupied the headquarters of the Education Secretariat of Veracruz and the Finance and Planning Secretariat in the city of Xalapa.

The protesters demanded the due payment of union fees and savings which are deposited twice a month in the Complimentary Benefit Fund, and payments due for Relocation (RZ).

Road blocks and occupation of offices and schools have been reported in Xalapa, Coatepec, Veracruz, Boca del Río, Córdoba, Orizaba, Acayucan, Coatzacoalcos, and Poza Rica. The Veracruz- Xalapa highway was blocked since 7 a.m. on Thursday.
