Federal Environmental Prosecutor Guillermo Haro Bélchez said that vehicle verification centers had some of their stations closed because their operations had not been verified by independent laboratories.

Haro Bélchez said that 103 verification stations were closed because the calibration of scales that they used had not been verified.

“It wasn’t because they didn’t have documents from the federal government, but because they hadn’t been verified by an independent laboratory,” he said.

Special Prosecutor’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) Undersecretary for Industrial Inspection Arturo Rodríguez Abitia said that scales in verification systems need to be tested by independent laboratories. Rodríguez Abitia said that there are four verification centers open, but the Environmental Secretariat (Semarnat) said that there are ten open.
