The Gallegos Initiative of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) claimed that Andrés Manuel López  Obrador is showing hostile behaviors towards the party and asked people “not to be fooled” regarding any agreement with the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

“Andrés Manuel López Obrador has not proposed any kind of agreement or alliance to the PRD. On the contrary, calling PRD members to abandon their party and join his shows hostility towards the political party that launched his career,” said spokesman for the Galileos Initiative Fernando Belauzarán.

Belauzarán pointed out that unity in the left will not be achieved through “crude summons to empty other political institutions” or calls to join the line in projects that only admit obedience as a way of participation. He also claimed that if López Obrador is interested in building an electoral front in 2018 along with the PRD and other parties, he “should formally state it” as Chair of Morena in order to open a dialogue on the electoral platform and agenda.

He also said that the upcoming National Council — to be held on March 24 — must set a critical direction for the PRD to establish an electoral platform and nominate a presidential candidate, as well as to build alliances with other parties and citizen initiatives.

The latter means the PRD must be open to a national transformation program along with the opposition and the civil society, which is why the party applauds Emilio Álvarez Icaza’s proposal to candidacy in the 2018 race.
