PGR to Take Over Nochixtlán Investigations

"The Attorney General has determined to take over the investigation that up until today was lead by the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office"

Dr. Gilberto Higuera Bernal, the Vice Attorney General for Regional Control, Penal Proceedings and Amparo of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) spoke today at a press conference. An amparo is a Mexican constitutional legal process that protects citizens and their basic rights. Higuera Bernal spoke regarding the events of June 19th in Nochitxlán, Oaxaca, which pertain to investigations started by the Federal Attorney General’s office, such as the destruction of federal buildings and vehicles.

“We want to make known that based in Article 20 and other related articles of the Federal Penal Code, the Attorney General has determined to take over the investigation that up until today was lead by the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office.”

The Vice Attorney said that the Public Prosecutor’s Office will lead the investigations into civil crimes that the Oaxaca Attorney General had initiated.

Higuera Bernal said that throughout the investigation the human rights of the victims and persons involved in the investigation will be respected.
