Peña Nieto: Mexico and Denmark to Work Together

President Enrique Peña Nieto said that Mexico and Denmark will begin a new stage of partnership, collaboration and shared growth, and that it has come time to make the most of the economic complementarity between both countries so they can continue to work together for the benefit of the Danish and Mexican people.

Peña Nieto noted that Denmark has remained a close friend of Mexico for nearly two centuries, having established diplomatic relations since 1827, and that both countries have followed a path of understanding, cooperation and rapprochement.

In recent years, both countries have joined forces in order to combat climate change, starting from the consolidation of Mexico’s proposal to establish the Green Climate Fund. In addition, with support from the Danish government, Mexico has strengthened its participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations, said Peña Nieto.

The Mexican president said, “It is an honor to be the first Mexican president to come to Copenhagen to make a state visit. It is an ideal way to open new spaces for political dialogue, strengthen our economic ties and renew the bonds of friendship between our societies.”

In particular, Mexico wishes to use the visit to ignite the true potential of the bilateral relationship regarding two specific areas: trade and investment and the creation of clean energy.

Denmark has become the first source of foreign direct investment in Mexico and the second largest treading partner among the Nordic countries. It also stands out throughout the world as a leader in clean energy generation.

There are more than 200 companies operating in Mexico with capital from Denmark and the Confederation of Danish Industry was recently created in Mexico City.
