A self-defense paramilitary group called “Totolapense Movement for Peace” has been formed in San Miguel Totolapan, in the Tierra Caliente region of Guerrero. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) recently recognized this as the site of operations for a criminal nicknamed “El Tequilero.”

Confirmed by its leaders, the new movement is in response to the wave of mass kidnappings that occurred in San Miguel and Ajuchitlán del Progreso.

The armed citizens retained El Tequilero’s mother, employees of the city hall and a regent of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI); in total there are about 20 people that the movement has retained.

Security spokesperson Roberto Álvarez Heredia confirmed the emergence of the self-defense group, a topic that he said will be addressed at the meeting of the Guerrero Coordination Group (GCG) on Tuesday in Acapulco.
