MEXICO CITY – Nissan announced on Wednesday that they will halt the production of the Tsuru model — sold in Mexico for over three decades — in May 2017.
The company stated that even if there will not be a direct substitute, costumers will be geared towards models such as the Nissan Versa or Nissan Tiida. A Tsuru special commemorative edition will be launched in March 2017, but only 1,000 units will be available.
The car manufacturer stated that “Tsuru has been a paramount product that helped establish Nissan in Mexico as one of the main investors and employers in the country. The company is confident in maintaining its position as a sales leader even without the iconic sedan.”
Since its market launch in 1984, this model has sold 2.4 million units to the date. Nissan will continue to provide parts and costumer service to vehicle owners.
Former director of Nissan Mexicana Airton Cousseau had previously announced that Tsuru’s structure did not allow for the integration of air bags, among other safety features, which are required by the vehicle standard NOM-194-SCFI. This standard will come into effect on 2018.
