Mexico City mayor, Miguel Ángel Mancera, paid tribute to the victim of the 1985 earthquake this morning, in front of the Hotel Regis in the Plaza de la Solidaridad, in the Historic Center.
Mancera said that Mexico City had learned from the tragic events of the past and improved security in the hope that it would never happen again.
At the solemn ceremony on Avenida Juárez, he explained that “Mexico City is now more prepared and more resilient against this type of event.”
He recalled the recent earthquake and spoke about how fortunate the capital was not to suffer extensive damage.
The mayor said that painful memories remain every year on September 19, but that “it also gives us this opportunity to think more about redesigning a city increasingly consistent in protecting its population.”
He asked the officials to continue strengthening their training and security measures and thanked all those who participated in the rescue of thousands of people.
“This city faces challenges and stands up to them well,” he concluded.
