Less than Half of PRD Deputies Renounced Insurance

The promise of 33 Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) federal deputies and one Morena deputy to renounce major medical expenses insurance, which costs 89,000 pesos ($4,924) every legislative term and are paid for with taxes, was not fulfilled.

According to the Expense Budget approved by the chamber, the deputies designated 44.7 million pesos for medical insurances expenses.

Sept. 27, 2015, PRD coordinator Francisco Martínez Neri announced that deputies from his party would renounce the medical insurance that is awarded to them every year.

Martínez Neri asked deputies to “tighten your belts and do what’s right. Renounce the major medical expenses insurance and privileges so that we can achieve austerity. Society is tired of simulations.”

CAPITAL MEDIA obtained a list of the deputies that did renounce the insurance. Out of the 60 legislators, only 27 renounced the resources. Some of them include Francisco Martínez Neri; Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo; Rafael Hernández Soriano, national PRD councilor; Felipe Reyes Álvarez, state councilor in Oaxaca; Jesús Valencia, former delegate in Iztapalapa; and Jesús Zambrano, current Chamber of Deputies Executive Board president.

Some of the deputies that did not renouce the resources include Hortensia Aragón Castillo, former general PRD secretary; Maricela Contreras, former Tlalpan delegate; Erika Irazema Briones, national PRD councilor; Julio Saldaña, national PRD councilor; and Isaura Ivanova Pool Pech, who recently participated in defending Tajamar.

The Movimiento Ciudadano and Morena also promised to renounce the insurance. From Movimiento Ciudadano, 25 deputies fulfilled the promise and from Morena 34 out of 35 renounced the resources.
