Interior Secretary Disapproves of CNTE-Morena Alliance

MEXICO CITY — Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, disapproved of the alliance between the leader of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) because it fostered violent actions and aims to justify them.

During an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva for Grupo Fórmula, the Mexican official expressed his disagreement with an alliance “that hurts others and makes announcements based solely on electoral interests.”

“I see agreements being made thinking solely about personal aspects, on obsessions to reach power without caring for the education of youths and children, without caring about circumstances or violence,” he said.

Osorio Chong said that the alliance fosters actions such as forcefully shaving teachers’ heads for breaking the strike promoted by CNTE. “As interior secretary and a citizen I cannot stay quiet,” he said.

In the upcoming elections, the secretary said that authorities were working to guarantee that the Sunday June 5 electoral process is peaceful, and avoids organized crime, in particular in the case of Tamaulipas.

He said that the attacks that had characterized the electoral campaigns should not be the answer, as “it does not represent a transparent democracy.”

In his opinion, it was necessary to make better proposals and not to harm others, as was the case when television advertisements made personal attacks and spread false information.

The secretary qualified the campaigns that concluded on June 1 as the most ruthless.

“This is not the way I conceive democracy, they have crossed the line,” he said.
