From City Hall to the Soccer Field

After the controversy triggered last week due to Cuernavaca Mayor Cuauhtémoc Blanco registration as player for “Las Águilas” América Football Club in the Liga Bancomer MX, the recently-elected official said everything was according to the procedures.

Blanco said there is no impediment for his participation in the América’s match against Morelia on the Azteca Stadium on March 5.

“The registration was made in december, I don’t care what the media says or what the envious people say. Everything was discussed then and everything was made in the right way. Indeed, the idea was that I will play against Puebla, but my participation was postponed for different reasons,” said Blanco.

Regarding Blanco’s government activities, President of the Cuernava Municipal Council Denisse Arizmendi said that the mayor “does not need the council’s authorization to train and play with América.”

Arizmendi said other local and state officials include extra activities in their schedules.

“We all go to the gym or have ‘extracurricular’ activities. Regarding Cuauhtémoc, the training sessions and the match don’t affect his activities as mayor,” she said.

Blanco said that he is aware that the game with América is part of the Liga MX scheduled matches and that he has been training since december.

“I’m being very professional. The communication with the team has been very productive. I’m going to train with them on Thursday in Coapa,” he said.

Blanco was elected mayor of Cuernavaca last year. He is a retired Mexican soccer legend and started his political career as a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
