Morelia, Michoacán – A nine year old from the Apatzingan municipality was identified as the first case of Zika in Michoacán.

The Michoacán Secretary of Health, Carlos Aranza Doniz, confirmed that the virus was native, after verifying that the child had not traveled to infected areas.

Authorities from the Health Secretariat began searching the area for more cases of the virus, focusing on the people closest to the child.

Aranza Doniz said that no other suspicious cases have been detected.

He also highlighted the importance of taking preventative measures to avoid that the illness spreads.
