MEXICO CITY – After the death of Monica Arriola, Senator for the New Alliance Party, Mexico City’s prison system granted the inmate Elba Esther Gordillo Morales permission to attend her daughter’s funeral.

The leave granted to Gordillo is based on article 92 of the capital city’s prison code and article 129 of that of the federal government, which indicates:

“With approval from the undersecretary, the director of a penal institution or the official in charge may allow an inmate to leave the institution in cases of the proven death or serious illness of a parent, child, sibling or other person who constituted part of the inmate’s nuclear family during their liberty.”

Permission will be granted, provided that the ‘furlough,’ or temporary leave, does not put the institution or society at risk.”

In both cases, the director of the institution will strictly control the security conditions for the inmate’s departure and return.

With such an authorization, the former leader of the National Education Workers Union (SNTE), Elba Esther Gordillo Morales, left the hospital in Colonia Roma where she is receiving treatment for her health problems. Once her daughter’s funeral was over, Gordillo returned to the hospital.

The director of a penal institution or the official in charge may allow an inmate to leave the institution in cases of the proven death or serious illness of a parent or child.”
