Deputy Says President’s Same-Sex Marriage Initiative a Smokescreen

MEXICO CITY — Marko Cortés Mendoza, the chamber of deputies coordinator for the National Action Party (PAN), stated that President Peña Nieto’s initiative to constitutionally recognize same-sex marriage is only a smokescreen, a manner of diverting attention from the struggles of the economy and the lack of jobs in the country.

The politician from Michoacán accused the president of seeking to distract with this proposal from Mexico’s essential problems, among them the insufficient amount of money in citizens’ pockets.

He stated that according to studies from the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL), salaries have less and less purchasing power.

“It is more than clear and more than obvious, and only he who doesn’t want to see doesn’t realize it. What the president is doing a couple of days before elections is to create a smokescreen.”

He concluded that, therefore, the president’s initiative was merely opportunistic.

“It is obvious is that the president’s proposal has us all talking about same-sex marriage, when we should be talking about moving the country forward, which is falling into and economic crisis.”
