The Employers Federation of Mexico (Coparmex) asked the federal Attorney General’s Office (PGR) to not allow outgoing governors implicated in corruption to escape prosecution.
Coparmex applauded President Enrique Peña Nieto’s move to block outgoing governors of two states from appointing their own anti-corruption prosecutors, but said that the move by itself was insufficient. In Quintana Roo and Veracruz, governors from the Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI) who are implicated in corruption, Roberto Borge Angulo and Javier Duarte de Ochoa, will be replaced by governors from the National Action Party (PAN).
“We don’t want witch-hunts, but we also don’t want the door closed to prosecution,” said former Coparmex head Gustavo de Hoyos Walther. “We want the PGR and state prosecutors to be clear and strong. If crimes have been committed, those responsible need to be punished.”
