MEXICO CITY – For the first time, the federal Attorney General Arely Gómez said that she contacted his Spanish counterpart, Consuelo Madrigal to request reports on the status of the former governor of Coahuila, Humberto Moreira Valdés, when he was accused of money laundering.

However, she justified this intervention, because it is “normal” procedure to maintain communication about relevant court cases for both prosecutors.

Gómez, after participating in the ceremony inaugurating operations of the Fifth Stage of the New Criminal Justice System, said that since she took over leadership of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), she has maintained constant communication with their counterparts in other countries in order to exchange information about relevant or pending cases on the bilateral agenda.

She recalled that for example Spain, has maintained communication around the Ibero-American organization of attorneys general, where she is vice president, but in the case of Moreira, only called her counterpart Consuelo Madrigal to learn about the open investigation against fellow former president of the PRI, but there was no pressure to release Moreira.

She said that every time the PGR becomes aware of any Mexican in trouble with the law in other countries, it acts accordingly, so there is nothing extraordinary with attention to Moreira.

For his part, Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong said the agency he leads had no involvement in the case and that everything was operated by the Foreign Relations Secretariat and the Attorney General’s Office. However, he can be called to review the support that can be provided to other Mexicans who are in judicial or more difficult consular processes.
