Another killing took place in the early morning Monday, upping the total to nine

At least seven family members were killed in Puerto Escondido Monday. The Puerto Escondido Prosecutors Office reported that the armed attack took place around 10 p.m. The victims were shark fishermen and the Prosecutors Office is investigating a possible link to drug trafficking.

At Segunda Poniente #50 in the city center, the shooters descended from a vehicle and entered the home, opening fire on its occupants. Four victims died at the scene of the crime and at four others died at the hospital. All of the victims were male adults.

Early on Monday morning, also in Puerto Escondido, a 52-year-old woman, only identified as Rosa “N,” from Santiago Jamiltepec, was killed near the Los Mangales housing development, when two subjects on a motorcycle opened fire.

The coast of Oaxaca is a strategic point to traffic drugs from Central and South America to the United States. However, the killings were uncharacteristic for a region that has escaped the worst violence of the drug war, in which 120,000 people have been killed in Mexico since the start of 2007.
