Sixty students from the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s (UNAM) Department of Architecture formed the Initiation of Social Service Brigade to enrich the necessary diagnostics and develop the “Comprehensive Management Plan for the Historic Center 2017-2022.”

This project is in collaboration with the Authority of the Historic Center of Mexico City.

This effort continues to bring into fruition the agreement UNAM and the Mexico City government established to add research, knowledge, information and skills for the benefit of the first block of the capital following the Dec. 11, 1987 recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

From Feb. 26 to March 5, surveys and data sheets have been created in the following categories: the state of conservation of properties; the quality and use of public space; signage of streets and informative plaques; and the analysis of the Plaza de la Constitución.

The data generated will update the Geographic Information System of the Historical Center, which enables the Authority to systemize the information necessary to plan and execute viable intervention policies for the improvement of living conditions and repopulation.

This opportunity is implemented by the administration of Miguel Ángel Mancera Espinosa, the mayor of Mexico City, so that new generations of architects specializing in the intervention of urban and historical heritage can formulate strategies, and to enable the Authority of the Historic Center to enrich its collection with scientific data for the conservation and rescue of world heritage.
