THURSDAY

Mexico celebrates its independence this weekend. You’ll probably have lots of chances to join the celebration, but why not warm up a couple days ahead by remembering or getting to know one of the most iconic characters of Mexican pop culture? Faro Oriente will honor legendary masked wrestler El Santo on his 100th anniversary screening some of his most beloved movies throughout September. Screenings start this Thursday with “El Santo in the Wax Museum” and will continue on a weekly basis until September 30. You can check the screening schedule here. The movie starts at 4:00 p.m. There’s no cost for entry.

Speaking of getting to know Mexican culture, here’s another chance: Crisanta will host a homage to Mexican composer Agustín Lara Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. If you’re for an evening of soft, romantic music with some food, give this one a try.

And if you feel like having an evening that’s a bit more active, a group of cyclists will be gathering to roll through the streets of Mexico City and enjoy the city lights. The trip begins at 9:00 p.m., starting from and ending at Harden Hub Polanco. You might want to get there a bit earlier, though, just to make sure you catch them before the pedaling starts. Also, bring water, a helmet and a small lamp. Wearing a reflective vest might be a good idea too.

FRIDAY

Halloween is still a month and a half away, but it’s never too early to celebrate with a couple scares. Cinépolis continues to cherish the legacy of Stanley Kubrick, this time with a screening of his horror masterpiece “The Shining.” The screening will happen at 8:00 p.m. in Cinépolis Oasis Coyoacán. This one will be the last Kubrick film screened by Cinépolis, so try not to miss it. If you can’t be there Friday, Cinépolis Paseo Acoxpa will screen it on Sunday, also at 8:00 p.m. Tickets cost 79 pesos.

Keeping with this month’s theme, Satélite’s Local Market has plans to celebrate Mexico’s independence with a traditional Mexican kermesse. There’ll be food, drinks, mariachis and a small fair. The kermesse starts at 1:00 p.m., and it will continue going until the early hours of Saturday. So don’t worry about being too late. There’s no cost for entry.

SATURDAY

Here’s some more cinema for you. The Railway Museum is hosting another film club evening. This time the club will screen “The Forgotten Ones,” a film by Luis Buñuel about a young boy who escapes the youth detention center and meets with his friends just to get in trouble once more. The movie starts at 4:00 p.m. There’s no cost for entry.

Craving something interesting to drink? Punto de Cruz Gallery & Café will receive mezcal crafter Sosima Olivera for an evening of mezcal tasting. There are only 20 spots available for the event, so if you’re interested call 55-2898-6634. Reservations cost 590 pesos.

SUNDAY

To keep up with Mexican patriotism, you might want to assist the Chiles en Nogada Festival at Cardón, a restaurant in the Sheraton Santa Fe hotel. The restaurant will be serving the dish in various forms as prepared by chef Marianela Morón. If you’ve never tasted this typical Mexican dish, there’s no better time than now. And if you already have, chef Morón might surprise you with her variations on the dish.

Still hungry for another dance after partying Mexican-style for several days? Swing Forever! Mexico is offering lindy hop classes this Sunday 2:00 p.m. at the Citadel Plaza. You can bring a partner or come by yourself. If you have no experience with lindy hop, don’t worry; beginners are welcome too. Sessions cost 60 pesos per person.

OTHER EVENTS

If you find yourself strolling through Chapultepec this weekend, you might want to visit the Caracol Museum and take a look at Playmohistoria, a small yet charming historical exhibit made up of Playmobil figures. The exhibit displays six dioramas which depict scenes of Mexican and world history, each one immense and full of details that you’ll probably spend quite some time exploring. Playmohistoria will remain in the museum until September 30. Tickets cost 70 pesos.

And for those who’re feeling a bit lonely and in need to fill a void in their lives, España Park will host a pet adoption campaign Sunday 12:00 p.m. The stands will be located on the edge of the park that faces Nuevo León street; look for the white tents and the crew on pink shirts. Also, if you’re in a helping mood, take some pet food with you for donation; the little doggies and kitties will sure appreciate it.
