What You’re Doing This Weekend in Mexico City

Summer vacation officially ended this week, and we are now counting down to the long weekend for Independence Day in September. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of this weekend, and The News is here to tip you off to events around Mexico City.

THURSDAY

The Franz Mayer Museum is inaugurating the World Press Photo exhibition at 7 p.m. There will be more than 150 photos on display that were winners of the most important international photojournalism contest, organized by the Dutch foundation World Press Photo. Two Mexican photographers have their works featured. More information is available on their Facebook event page. The photos will be on display until Sept. 25. The museum is located at Hidalgo 45, Centro.

FRIDAY

Cine Tonalá will be screening the film “Te Prometo Anarquía” (I Promise You Anarchy) directed by Julio Hernández Cordón. The film portrays two best friends in Mexico City who start to sell their blood to drug traffickers. There will be a Q&A segment with actors from the film after the screening and craft beer will be served. The screening is at 7 p.m. Tickets are 30 pesos and are on-sale at Cine Tonalá, Tonalá 261 in Roma Sur. More information can be found on the Cine Tonalá website.

Also on Friday evening, the design and architecture archive and gallery ARCHIVO in San Miguel Chapultepec will be holding a closing event at 7 p.m. for their most recent exhibit “DISEÑO EN PROCESO” (Design in Process). There will be an informal talk with the designers who took part in the exhibit. The event requires pre-registration.

SATURDAY

The first contemporary music cycle of the University Contemporary Art Museum (MUAC) kicks off Saturday afternoon. Túumben Paax (the vocal ensemble who brought us “Marea Roja“) will perform contemporary choral works by Mexican composers, including “Tierra de maíz” (Land of Corn) by Diana Syrse, who composed the music for “Marea Roja.” The concert costs 50 pesos and will take place in the MUAC agora at 12:30 p.m.

Also on Saturday is the Festival Magna, at the Nuevo Foro Hilvana on Puente de Alvarado 17, in Buenavista. The festival showcases more than 50 contemporary poets and four musical acts. There will also be poetry collections and books from independent editors on sale. The free festival starts at 1 p.m. and more information is available on the Facebook page Magma de Verano.

Saturday and Sunday, the Huerto Roma Verde (The Roma Green Garden) at Jalapa 234 in Roma Sur is hosting a two-part workshop on growing your own food. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days and participants will learn how to plant their own garden, with limited space and resources. The preeminent Colombian cumbia group La Mejor Sonora Dinamita de Lucho Argain will be performing Saturday night at the Pata Negra Centro Histórico, the new branch of the popular bar and club. The show is free but passes are distributed on a first come, first served basis at 8 p.m. It’s a great chance to see a famous group that will surely have the crowd dancing away. Pata Negra Centro Histórico is located at Avenida 5 de Mayo #49, Centro.

SUNDAY

There is no better party for a Sunday than Traición. The queer party this week is at the bar and restaurant Puebla 109, in Roma Norte. The cover is 100 pesos and resident DJs are Mexican Jihad of N.A.A.F.I., Derré Tidá, DJ BJ and Pepe Romero. It starts at 4 p.m. and runs until midnight.
