What You’re Doing this Weekend in Mexico City

THURSDAY

Rainy season is likely to get people down due to the massive ensuing floods around the city. To effectively fight back the effect of the gray skies on your mood, swing by Museo del Chopo and immerse yourself in the 50 years worth of work of the exceptional Magali Lara. Her techniques are as varied as her subjects, from comics to ceramics, which curator Cecilia Delgado puts together in the Del verbo estar exhibition. Get inspiration from the abstract language of this prolific artist and the 230 pieces on display until September 3. Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday and entrance is $30 pesos.

FRIDAY

Do you know what the gamelan sounds like? Hmm, the gamelan from Indonesia? Then, go to Bucareli 69 at 9 p.m. and find out; as is always the case with music, you will be thankful you found it. Entrance is 50 pesos.

SATURDAY

In King Kong Theory, Virginie Despentes’ perfectly outlines the other 99 percent of the female population that exceeds (not that they don’t “fit in”) the parameters of the consumerist society; It also tells a true story about the dangers that women’s bodies are subject to everyday. Vertigo Galería and Amnesty International have created a project called Vivan las Mujeres, an initiative that seeks to draw attention to gender violence, through art, music and literature. This exhibition will showcase the work over 90 female artists who created specific pieces regarding violence against women, whether from a poetic, personal or conceptual point of view. Don’t miss this wonderful exhibition and keep an eye on the additional activities and courses. The exhibition runs until August 13 at the Centro Cultural de España.

Parenting is probably one of the most daunting endeavors in the scope of human experiences. Scenarios vary: toddler potty training, explaining your teen the concept of religion, or maybe educating your Martian son about human sexual identity. This is the adventure that captain Jiuston Uitini and Yustafas the pilot face in the play La avenida láctea, a cabaret exploration of gender and gender roles. Written, directed and staged by Andrés Carreño, the show is presented in the Foro A Poco No as part of the program Entre lenchas, vestidas y musculocas. The play runs every Saturdays in June at 7 p.m. Entrance is 156 pesos.

SUNDAY

Tradition dictates that on this day you closely observe the cult to the garnacha (sweatpants optional). Be faithful to the old ways and visit the Granashow 2017, an amazing line-up of delicacies from all over the city, each borough proudly represented at Hamburgo 44, Juárez. Entrance is free! The event runs from 12-8 p.m.

The best new development in the city’s landscape since bike lanes are, without a doubt, parties on Sunday. It’s all about making the most out of the last day of the weekend, battling the inevitable post-4 p.m. blues and mixing (maybe matching?) around. If you’re new to the concept or a hardcore follower, drop by Mooi Collective‘s headquarters at Dr. Vertiz 86, Doctores and experience the inclusive ‘Ponte Guapo’ for yourself. The party is centered around diversity and fine music, the tone will be set by the Canadian band Les Deuxluxes and Malami’s light-based installation. Entrance is 150 pesos (cash only!), party starts at 6 p.m. Don’t forget
