What You’re Doing this Weekend in Mexico City

THURSDAY

To bring a characters to life, actors make use of their physical and emotional training while playwrights summon all their literary skills. Wouldn’t it be something if they switched places? Writer and director Ignasi Duarte tries to answer this question in the performance Conversaciones ficticias where writers are invited to play out their characters and start an on-stage conversation with a performer who will talk about literature. Poet Rocío Cerón will join the experiment on Thursday in Centro Cultural de España at 7 p.m. Entrance is free.

FRIDAY

Ease into the weekend with a performance by none other than Brooke Candy. In 2012, Brooke’s in-your-face presence and style earned her a spot on Grimes’s Genesis video, now her powerful lyrics and stage presence have evolved into an act of her own. The multi-talented artist began her music career as a rapper and has moved on to electro-pop working in collaboration with Sia. You can find her tonight and tonight only at Teatro Garibaldi. Tickets are 500 pesos. Be there by 10 p.m.

In case you are in a nostalgic and more down-tempo mood, you can always head to the Teatro Metrópolitan and be a part of the celebration of Chetes‘ first 20 years in the music scene. From Zurdok to his solo career, he will be playing the jewels of his repertoire along with several special guests. Tickets for this trip down memory lane start at 230 pesos. It’s a painting! It’s a photograph! No, it’s both of them! The work of Darío Villalba resists categorization. The exhibition currently at Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil shows the work Villalba created in over 40 years. The Spanish artist makes use of unconventional techniques and approaches to deal with topics such as sensory, memory and the every day. The museum opens at 10 a.m and entrance is 40 pesos.

SUNDAY

We experience violence everyday, multiple kinds of aggressions than range from the systemic to the physical. To resist the urge to normalize it and provide an outlet for it, artistic expression proves to be a space from which it can be faced and questioned. Facing the smell of death is the response of a collaboration between Mexican and Dutch artists to encourage artistic practices to confront and explore the roots of violent acts. Cynthia Aguirre and Laura Ríos‘ pieces explore the role of women’s body and tenderness in the Foro A Poco No, at 6 p.m. Tickets are 156 pesos.
