The first weekend in May is the perfect for first-time ~cultural~ experiences

THURSDAY

The tuba, the overgrown relative of the trumpet that produces the ominous death bass in most film scores. The microtonal tuba, the tuba’s identical twin that boasts the wonderful feature of playing very pitch in the range of the instrument thus amplifying its scope away from the eerie. To find out exactly what this sounds like, head to la Casa del Lago Juan José Arreola and listen to Microtub, the first band of microtonal tuba in the world. The concert performed by Robin Hayward (creator of the microtonal tuba), Peder Simonsen and Martin Taxt will be the first to be played in an open space in Latin America. Don’t miss this unique opportunity, concert starts at 8 p.m. Entrance is free.

FRIDAY

Hawks, rattlesnakes, cacomixtles, and fake scorpions live among us. In the city, yes. Never heard of this? Is your life in danger? Should you be leaving a tiny bowl of water outside your apartment during the warm months? Find out straight from the horse’s mouth at Los Vecinos Ocultos, this weeks edition of the open talks organized by the Sociedad de Científicos Anónimos in Cine Tonalá. Engage in the discussion led by José Orozco who will provide an overview on the current situation of the city’s wild inhabitants. Entrance is free, be there at 8 p.m.

SATURDAY

It is the first Saturday in May and across the world that means one thing and one thing only: Free Comic Book Day. If you are a comic book fan this is no news to you, but for the rest of us, simple mortals, it is our big opportunity to scout and get to know this realm of fantasy. Get your hands on (up to three!) copies of Gold and Silver titles including Doctor Who, Rick and Morty and Spongebob Freestyle Funnies. Head early to your nearest Fantástico/Comicastle store because there will probably be a long line. Stores open at 8 a.m. and entrance is free.

A play about the bloody aftermath of a play about the abuse of power and religion. A play about the writer’s teenage past as a member of a radical right group. Fancy Lupe, the brain child of Pepe Romero explores repression, radicalism and symbolism in this play/performance piece. Don’t miss the opening season at La Teatrería, Saturdays and Sundays 7 p.m. Tickets 250 pesos.

SUNDAY

When was the last time you attended a concert in Bellas Artes? Exactly. Don’t waste anymore time and go get your tickets to the performance of the National Symphonic Orchestra. Enjoy the beauty of the breathtaking building before it sinks and … What’s that? Not that into classical music? Well, they are playing Disney’s Fantasia which might be one of the finest music selections to smoothly approach the genre. There are performances at 12:15 and 1:45 p.m., tickets start at 40 pesos.
