The Navy Secretariat reported a shootout between members of the Federal Forces and alleged criminals in Tepic, Nayarit on Thursday night. The encounter resulted in 12 people killed – none of them members of the armed forces – including alleged leader of the “Beltrán Leyva”organized crime cell Juan Francisco Patrón Sánchez.

A statement issued by the Navy Secretariat informed that the shootout arose from a coordinated operation by the Federal Forces in pursuit of the alleged criminals who responded with high-caliber weapons. In accordance to Armed Forced procedures, the assault was quelled with dissuasive fire from a support helicopter in order to reduce civilian or military casualties.
