College radio aims to publicize the work of the university, but also should serve the greater community, said Spanish university radio station representatives Agustín Vivas Moreno, Daniel Martín-Pena and Macarena Parejo Cuellar at the “College Radio Forum” held at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM).

At the forum, led by the Gastón Pedraza Muñoz, director of Uni Radio 99.7 FM, the UAEM’s radio station, the Spanish radio specialists explained the important role that university broadcasters now have.

After welcoming those attending the forum, Gastón Pedraza elaborated on the relationship of university radios with different sectors of society, including the music community, as college radio can be a platform for local emerging bands.

Macarena Parejo said a priority is to create radio shows that give space to researchers who are authorities on various subjects, like the project “The Role of College Radio in Spain,” which sought to popularize science through radio. The researchers made the language accessible so that the public could understand more nuanced research projects.

Martin-Pena said that students should be leaders in college radio and advocated the creation of spaces for them, noting that that radio is a way for students to connect with their educational institution and the institution’s values.
