Malaysian Embassy Second Secretary and Head of Chancery Khornelisman Jasri and his wife Noornina M. Saad hosted a small Quran recitation and Eid celebration at their Lomas de Chapultepec residence on Saturday, July 16, to commemorate their 12-year-old daughter Dewi Farzana Puti Khornelis’ Khatam al-Quran.

Also completing his Khatam al-Quarn ceremony was 16-year-old Aiman Anuar from the Malaysian Embassy.

Much like the Catholic First Communion or Jewish Bar Mitzvah, the Khatam is an important religious rite of passage celebrated among Muslim youths and conducted after the completion of the recital of 30 chapters of the Quran since the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

Held during the post-Ramadan Eid celebrations, the Khatam ceremony is particularly important in Malaysia, where young girls recite the final chapter of the Quran before friends and relatives.

After the ceremony at the Jasri residence, which was attended by both Malaysian Ambassador Mohammad Azhar Bin Mazlan and his wife Amelia Amani Lee Abdullah and Indonesian Ambassador Yusra Khan and his wife Desfira Yusra, along with other embassy staff and members of the Southeast Asian community in Mexico, there was a light meal of traditional Malaysian cuisine.
