We give you the run-down on Duolingo and why it's the best tool for learning a new language

APPS & BOTS

We live in an entirely new world than the one that came before us. Our generation gets to experience so many more things and technology makes it easier for us to have access to more knowledge. Plus there’s the fact that the world is becoming a lot more mixed in terms of culture and language.

The truth is that not only has the world gotten bigger so to speak, but it’s gotten busier as well. Maybe we want to learn languages and travel to places but we just don’t have the time to do it. Well here at the News we might be able to help you out with one of those.

Duolingo is an easy way to either learn a new language from scratch or freshen up the details of a language you already know. It is an internet based platform that includes the website and app. It is a mostly free system, certain things might require an in-app purchase but for the most part it’s free.  This is good for those people that don’t really have a lot of time on their hands to go out and take classes. With Duolingo, you can dedicate a few minutes of your day to studying a new language.

Cost: Free

Available: iOS, Android, Windows 8/10 and Apple

Languages: It has 68 different language courses across 23 languages (with 22 additional ones in development)

Accessibility: It’s very easy to use and does a small test to see how you are faring in a language before you begin to learn it

Goals: There are different goals settings ranging from basic, earning 1 xp per day, to Insane, earning 50 xp per day. The other levels are casual (10 xp), Regular (20xp) and Serious (30xp)

Fun fact: For fans of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” or HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Duolingo gives you the option of learning High Valyrian, the language that the Targaryans use.
