The head of the Gulf Cartel, Antonio Haro Rodríguez, also known as ‘El Toñín,’ has been arrested in an operation by the armed forces of Mexico.

The Gulf Cartel has been the most prominent drug trafficking organization in the Gulf of Mexico and on the east coast for decades.

The operation took place in Tamaulipas and Veracruz and was carried out by a coalition of federal forces, including the Intelligence Division of the Federal Police, the Marines, the Attorney General’s Office and the National Defense Secretariat. Eloy Fernando del Ángel Hernandes and Omnar García Torres were also arrested in the raid.

Haro Rodríguez was in charge of directing criminal activities along the coast and in the Gulf of Mexico between Southern Tamaulipas and Pánuco, Veracruz.
